On Monday we sadly said goodbye to Richard Snell, an unassuming design giant who not only created beautiful things but inspired generations of designers here in his adopted home in Birmingham.
Richard first studied design in Birmingham during the 1960’s and then combined teaching at BIAD / BCU with furniture design. During his career he designed chairs for a number of companies including Hostess Furniture and Hille, for whom with David Rowe, he created the classic SE chair.
Richard continued inspiring and working right up until his death at 69. His long-term design partner David Rowe said that in his final days Richard had worked with him to resolve the missing piece of his last project, a fully recyclable plastic school chair.
