Studio 144 is Southampton’s new arts complex and the new home for the University of Southampton's John Hansard Gallery, community film organisation City Eye and is a second venue for Nuffield Southampton Theatres, NST City.
The new complex is a contemporary, flexible and dynamic arts space, spread across two iconic buildings, which pushes the boundaries of a typical arts centre by creating flexible and dynamic interiors.
Fusing the interior and exterior, the use of cool grey continuous screed flooring reflects the Portland Stone of the adjacent Guildhall Square. Warmth is added to the palette through use of dark fumed oak to break up the spaces and harmonise both buildings.
The Nuffield Southampton Theatre contains a 450-seat flexible performance space with retractable seating, plus a dance/rehearsal studio, box office, dressing rooms, backstage stores, offices and bookshop.
With the use of demountable furniture and a sunken pit, the theatre can be changed to accommodate four different types of performance. The continuous use of dark fumed oak within the performance spaces add a rich texture and acoustic baffling without impeding upon the audience’s view.
