Located in the heart of Wilmslow, GHA’s Chapelwood scheme for PegasusLife is a home for retirement living. The project is a contemporary interpretation of the Victorian red brick villas of the surrounding area, that incorporates the recommendations of the HAPPI report.

Chapelwood is in a relatively tranquil area, with natural screening to the site boundary provided by mature existing poplars, planes, yew and chestnut trees. The project replaces two former council buildings, areas of hard landscape and car parking which were are at odds with the sensitive location.

The scheme comprises two elegant red brick pavilions that will provide 57 high-quality, one, two and three-bedroom, open-plan retirement apartments together with a range of communal facilities, all arranged in a design that relates to the landscape. Private balconies and terraces adjoin the living areas, providing views over the grounds. Accommodation is arranged around a new courtyard centred on the most significant tree on the site.

The architecture is designed to maximise views and light whilst at the same time relates to the local context. Chimneys are used for the ventilation and environmental management of the buildings and as an aesthetic tool, articulating the facades and roofline of the building.
