Together with Allies and Morrison, BDP, Dixon Jones, and Panter Hudspith, GHA are shortlisted in the AJ100 Architectural Collaboration of the Year category for Westgate Oxford.
Designed to revitalise the Westgate Shopping Centre, the wider masterplan was designed by BDP and consists of a series of individual urban blocks, knitted together by a series of public spaces and urban fabric, allowing the shopping centre to operate as a single entity. GHA designed the John Lewis department store which forms the key retail component of the new masterplan.
The store presents a calmness through its well-ordered facades which, whilst contemporary, are rooted in the genius loci of Oxford. The detailed design is informed by careful study and creative interpretation of the unique historic precedent set by Oxford’s unique buildings and townscape.
The AJ100 is a ranking of the largest architectural practices in the UK, measured by the number of qualified architects employed. Published annually since 1995 this survey offers a timely snapshot of the profession over the previous calendar year and measures the level of optimism among practices for the year to come.
The winner will be announced at the annual AJ100 Dinner and Awards on the 13th June, along with the results of 12 other categories and the details of the 100 architectural practices that make up this year’s AJ100.
