Wirral Met College, the first new development in Peel Holdings’ £4bn Wirral Waters scheme, was a winner last night at the RIBA North West Awards 2016. Chosen from a shortlist of 17, Wirral Met College was one of only 10 winners.
We were particularly pleased that the jury recognised that although somewhat industrial, the building’s form and materials are true to their function and context.
The citation also identified the way the building works within an excellent landscape scheme. The judges said that “the setting of the dockside has been fully exploited, yet this is not a normal UK design response. The absence of barriers to water was noticeable and combined with the lack of perimeter fencing the landscape is allowed to act as an outside space that people want to be in – not an enclosed car park.” They identified that the building and its landscape “can act as a blueprint for an excellent minimum standard for future phases.”
